8 Tips for Reiki for Kids (and Teens)!

It's hard to think of the littlest and youngest people in your life struggling, but they're not immune to difficulty. Whether you're a parent, aunt or uncles, grand- or god-parent, or other caregiver, your heaet goes out to your young loved ones when they're not doing so great.

You don't have to feel helpless, though. Here, I'll share everything you need to know about how Reiki can support the kids in your life, including:
  • Challenges young people face
  • Ways Reiki can help
  • Tips on how to practice Reiki for kids
  • Must-dos when giving Reiki to Teenagers
Over the years, I've had many parents and caregivers bring children in for Reiki. The adults usually receive (or learn) Reiki first, and after experiencing its healing benefits, they ask their kids if they'd like to come try Reiki too.

Challenges for Children

Childhood is a time of unconditional love, safety and protection, and discovery and learning, but there can be challenges along the way. In the past, common problems included challenges in school with either learning or social life, injuries from play, sports or growth spurts, and illness or other common health problems.

As our world modernizes, there are more and more childhood diagnoses of ADHD, Autism spectrum or other learning disabilities, cases of addiction to devices, and issues with emotional regulation. Socially, there are more reports of isolation, loneliness, bullying and even reliance on medications. Sometimes, kids just struggle at school or in their social circle.

Receiving and living with a diagnosis can be hard in itself, on top of the illness or health condition itself. Yet, children are some of the most resilient people I've met. And, their Reiki treatments are some of the most fun and amazing ones I've given!

How Reiki Helps Kids

Reiki healings provide all the same benefits for children that they do for adults, with two main differences: they teach children early on in their lives the importance of self care, and Reiki healings instil the ability to see that their pain and suffering is temporary. This helps empower children to advocate for, and seek out health solutions for themselves as they grow, and to know that any health issue they face doesn't have to be a life sentence.

Can Children Learn Reiki?

Speaking of empowerment, I often get asked if a children can learn Reiki. While some practitioners will attune small children , it's not advised, as kids under 13 are generally too young to be attuned to practice Reiki themselves. They may encounter issues and problems when practicing with others that are too overwhelming for young people to face.

That said, as young and rapidly-developing people, kids are excellent candidates for receiving Reiki healing as they readily take to the light and high-vibration frequencies. Always ask them if they'd like Reiki, rather than force it upon them, and be prepared to sit in on their session (if the child agrees).

Often, giving your own child Reiki is the best and most conenient way to bring about healing and wellness, and doing so can also create a wonderful bond between you and them. But sometimes the child is unwilling because they feel you may be trying to control them or they may feel like they don't want you to invade their private thoughts and feelings (more on teens below!). In these caess, it's more effective for a child to visit a trusted Reiki practitioner outside their inner circle -- someone more neutral and objective.

Many of my Reiki students who wish to give Reiki to their younger children, report that their kids are too rambunctious, have too little patience or have too short attention spans to receive a Reiki treatment. So, here are a few things that I do when giving Reiki to kids:

1. Time goes out the window

Children are like sponges. They only need to hear some things once and they'll remember them for life. They readily sense healing and often readily absorb it. If they're very little, they don't need a whole hour and they won't lie still that long anyway. We're used to giving hour-long sessions, but try 20-30 minutes, or start with just ten, make it fun and memorable, and go from there.

If you're taking your child to get a Reiki session from someone, discuss with your child if you're going to be in the room with them, what the Reiki treatment entails, and remind them to speak if something doesn't work for them (a silly and easy to remember code word can come in handy here). Remember that even if the hamds-on part of the treatment is only 30 minutes, it will likely take the practitioner some time to talk with your child beforehand, to hear first hand what they struggle with, to explain to them what the treatment looks like, to get them comfortable, and perhaps even play with them or show them some toys or healing tools like crystals to gain your child's trust first. Leave some time for this.

2. Simplify Hand Positions

Toddlers' and young children's bodies are small, so standard hand positions may do double duty. Front of the face and side of the face may be merged, as can solar plexus and tummy. Don't worry about form as much as connection. The happier the child, the bigger the smile, the more laughter, the more contentment, the more they'll relax, release and consciously receive, appreciate and even look forward to the healing.

3. Connect

Children may not be used to having an adult work on them on a table. If they have, it's usually been with gloved hands, cold stethoscopes, directives to sit still and sadly, injections. A good practitioner will take some time to establish rapport. Children should be allowed to talk (even sing!) during the session if they want to. If you're giving Reiki to someone else's child, be interested in their lives, address them by their name, and get them to feel happy and comfortable with you.

4. Communicate

Children are young and open. Often they are told to be quiet, behave, pay attention and even "grow up"! A good practitioner will ask them questions. A simple, "how does this feel?" can go a long way. If you're giving Reiki to a child, and sense the energy in the Reiki treatment, like images, the presence of guardian angels, or even sensations, temperature fluctuations or colours, communicate these. Have them visualize coloured lights enveloping them like soft blankets or bubbles of protection. You can guide them to visualise or to feel their breath expanding and releasing at their belly like a balloon. Not only will it help make the time on the table more interesting and pass more quickly for them, you will be helping them see that it's okay to sense things that most grown ups ignore or dismiss.

5. Toys!

When a child comes into my healing studio, I immediately put on a bit happier, more upbeat music, and bring out the tray of crystals. I ask them if they'd like to include crystals in their treatment and if they say yes, I ask them to select a few that they like the best. Kids intuitively sense what they like and what feels good. They often even know when the crystals are done their work -- and hand them to me telling me so! If your child has a special stuffed animal or doll that they love, invite their toy into the Reiki treatment. Often children will feel safer with these beloved companions by their side.

6. Don't sit still

Many adults are sitting most of the day. Kids, on the other hand, like to move about. If the child is restless during Reiki, it could mean that they sense the movement of energy or that they need a good release. I always go with the flow. I will often ask them if we can do some movements, and then take their arms or legs and shake them about, or give them nice, rhythmic side to side swings. Sometimes, when a child isn't able to sit or lie still at all, I do the session by distance while in the same room. We may even hold hands and dance. Sometimes I get them to open their mouth and make funny noises with me. Brrr! Wa-Hooo! This often ends with real smiles and big belly laughter!

7. Hugs and Cuddles

When it comes to our kids, Reiki doesn't have to be given formally. Often I will feel the energy coming out of my hands when I am cuddling with or hugging my niece or nephew. They love it so much at bedtime and when reading books together. In fact, I often get the biggest hugs from them! So if you've learned Reiki and wish to share it with your kids, give them lots of hugs and spend time cuddling, watching TV or reading together. Let the Reiki flow naturally.

8. Boo-Boos

Don't forget, it's often our first instinct when a child has an injury, to place our hands over the affected area. Spot healing works wonders with children, so even if it's not a full head-to-toe healing, your child will benefit from the energy and attention on that one spot that needs attention fast!

What About Teens?

The above are just some of the ways I approach Reiki for younger kids. For older kids and teenagers, privacy is super important, and perhaps one of the biggest factors deciding whether they will be comfortable, trust you and be open to future healing. They'll often choose to come into the treatment room without their parents. We always make sure they know that I'm not discussing anything confidential outside their session. Sometimes they have a hard time communicating things with their parents or siblings. We often role-play during the session so that teens can listen to what's in their hearts and feel freer talking to their parents or others, from a supported and empowered place within themselves. Sometimes there's a feeling or a diagnosis of depression and anxiety. In these cases, Reiki can make all the difference in the world, by offering perspective, space and acceptance. Teens know there's a supportive place they can turn to if they need help or want someone to listen to them.

No matter whether you are giving Reiki to a child or bringing your child for a Reiki session, it's a wonderful gift for them and helps with their physical, mental, emotional and spiritual health and development. They might feel more focused at school, have a better feeling about their physical body, go off to sleep more easily, enjoy better relationships at home or feel more empowered in their social circles. My own niece and nephew love it so much, they still ask for Reiki at bedtime when they come to stay with me, and they'rein their teen and pre-teen years now. I highly recommend sharing Reiki treatments with kids of all ages!

Whether you give kids Reiki or have them receive Reiki healing from a practitioner, I hope these tips provide you with more insight and that both you and kids in your life benefit as a result.

Three Reasons to Keep Reiki Symbols Secret

There are three Reiki Symbols that are shared with those attuned to Reiki Level Two, one Master Symbol that is shared at Level Three and three additional symbols at Level Four, the Master/Teacher Level. The symbols are embedded in the attunement process itself, meaning that those who learn Reiki at these levels are attuned to these symbols as part of their course. They contain elements of Japanese Kanji or alphabet, and those attuned to them are instructed to draw and speak their names the same way each time to harness and amplify the power of Reiki.

Even though it has been explicitly stressed that the symbols are to be kept confidential until a student is learning Reiki at Level Two, there is a lot of controversy among students of Reiki around whether Reiki Symbols should be shared publicly. Here, I will give some perspective, from my own experience, and share three reasons why I feel the symbols should be kept confidential.

Symbols
Symbols

Symbols are everywhere. The very letters and words you're now reading are each a symbol pointing to something, and represented by certain markings. Every time a word is uttered or written it symbolizes something other than the markings or the utterance itself. Think of the word, "Love". Now think of the word, "Hate". Think of the word, "Freedom". Now think of the word, "Suffering". Very different feelings will come up.

There are countless symbols floating out there in universes known and unknown to us. Each has a particular feel or energy to it. When drawn or spoken, it is an act, a ritual in and of itself. It is this act of drawing, speaking or applying the symbol that harnesses and amplifies its vibration and power for it's intended purpose.

If someone simply sees a Reiki symbol, but is not initiated or attuned to it, not taught how to use it, or if they simply don't know what it means, it won't be of much active use to them. If you see the written word, "Love", and don't know its meaning, it will not have much effect on you. If you understand it's meaning it can be powerful when shared with you or shared by you.

Master Mikao Usui

Why a Secret, Then?

1. Respecting Intention

Reiki Symbols were not intended for use those not initiated to them. Symbols aren't even taught in Reiki Level One, but begin to be taught at Reiki Level Two. If Master Usui felt the first three symbols are so powerful that they are taught at a certain level of Reiki training, then anyone calling themselves a Reiki teacher or practitioner is advised to respect this intention.

2. Protection Against Misappropriation

One of the biggest reasons I see to keep the Reiki Symbols secret from those who are not attuned or initiated to them is simply for protection. These symbols denote sacred and beautiful energy, much like the cross and the swastika were before they were misused by those will ill intentions. The inverted cross of St Peter reminds us that he felt unworthy to be crucified upright as Jesus had. Over time, the inverted cross was misappropriated for anti-Christian messaging and purposes. The swastika, a thousands of years old symbol of prosperity and good luck in India and other parts of the world, has also been misappropriated and misused. It is now synonymous with Nazi racism and hatred in the west. These are worst case scenarios but we also see what happens with symbols such as the cross when they are simply watered down. The meaning is lost or loses its power when there is no faith behind it.
Om, A Cultural and Religious Symbol

3. Symbols are Active and Communicate

I've encountered individuals who just love the look of the symbols. And I agree with them -- they are beautiful. Some people create art with Reiki Symbols, decorate their space with them and some tattoo themselves with them. It may feel like an homage to Reiki or it may feel as if the tattoos or designs continuously emit Reiki. Without conscious action, they don't emit anything. They don't heal, protect, purify or make us better people, just because they Reiki Symbols are stamped on us. In fact, we may even forget that symbol is there, like we could forget an important or sacred text or book sitting on a bookshelf. An individual with a Reiki symbol tattooed on her arm who has lowered her consciousness using substances (I've seen this), isn't protected from being an attraction for a lower spirit or entity. It doesn't heal an illness or problem or make her more powerful or more special than anyone. The tattooed symbol doesn't do anything at all, other than in this case, communicate something about the person with the tattoo and perhaps deters prospective clients.

Want to Share the Symbols? First Ask Yourself:

  • Why do I feel so compelled to share these symbols with people who aren't initiated to Reiki?
  • What am I trying to achieve with this?
  • What message am I relaying by decorating myself or my surroundings with Reiki Symbols? Why?
  • What makes me want to go against the Usui Reiki tradition and share something that I was asked to keep confidential?

Essential Reiki Kit

One of the reasons I absolutely love Reiki is that doesn't require any props or equipment. No pills, no liquids, lights, gadgets, implements, chemicals... and really no technique... just your hands.

This is also why self healing with Reiki is so easy to do while on the go. Even if you just need a spot healing you can always put your hands on the affected area for a short time and feel the discomfort begin to melt.

...But what about giving someone else Reiki?

As someone who often travels to see clients, I really feel that it's not necessary to take much. I do have a small Essential Reiki Kit that lives in my purse though, for client visits. And I'm going to spill it. Here's what's inside:

1. Alcohol

No... not rum, whiskey or gin! You always want to make sure your hands are clean when you are giving a Reiki treatment. I carry a small spray sanitizer bottle in my purse, filled with 99% alcohol. It's better than regular hand sanitizers because it's cleaner, free of soapy and perfumey fragrances and it dries better. If you didn't know, the drier the hands, the more sensitive they are, so put off moisturising until after the session is done.

2. Music

If the person receiving the treatment agrees to music, it can perform three functions. First, soothing music helps to relax the person during the session, which can be difficult when they're still in their own environment. Second, it muffles background sounds and distracting reminders of busy every day life. And third, since you don't want to be glancing at a clock, it helps keep time.

I keep it simple and use my phone. iPods or mp3 players are great too. Newer ones don't need speakers and can amplify in a small room just fine. I play one track. It's 25 minutes of relaxing healing music set on repeat. Each time the track ends I know how much time I have left or whether to begin wrapping up, which for a 60 minute session is a few minutes into the third play.

3. Crystals

This is entirely optional. If you bring crystals, make sure they are spotlessly clean and energized and you know how to use them. I keep them in a small container that has padding on the bottom and is pretty tight when they are all stacked inside. This prevents crushing and chipping. Although I used crystals all the time in the past, I now feel I only need them when they are called for, for example if I need a terminator wand to concentrate a laser beam of healing directed at a tumour. Or when someone requests them.

.... And that's it.

My whole Essential Reiki Kit fits in the palm of my hand.

I ask new clients if they need me to bring a Reiki / massage table (which I'd bring with clean, fresh sheets) but most people are comfortable across the foot of their beds or on a sofa and their favourite pillows and throws for any extra support or comfort.

If you have an Essential Reiki Kit, what's inside?

Psychic Sensing with Reiki

A few weeks ago a student asked: "I pick up psychic information when practising Reiki. Where is it coming from? ...And how is it being sensed?"

I almost jumped up and down. I LOVE getting questions like this! Not because I love discussions with a high "woo-woo" factor, but because it means that people are practising! We talk about this stuff in Reiki courses and training, but we only really understand with experience. I'm basically doing the Snoopy dance.

Drumroll Please! It's Coming from...

Your Guidance! You knew I'd say that didn't you? We learn that once we are attuned to Reiki, we are connected with healing guidance from and for the highest of good. This guidance intelligently knows what's required for healing, and focuses its attention accordingly. We practitioners are simply the conduit or channel.

Sometimes students are skeptical. That's okay. I was too. Yet soon I started knowing things I couldn't have known - important things that pointed to the root cause of the issue or helped me direct healing energy to best address the issue, whether physical, emotional or spiritual. There's nothing like direct experience.

The more we practise, the better we get at understanding how our Reiki guidance is communicating with - and working through - us. Doubt will rear it's ugly head! But if we block out our guidance, we may be limiting healing potential. The more open, patient and unassuming we are, the more easily and accurately we will understand the guidance we are getting and the more healing will be possible. So that's half the answer...

How do we Know Without Knowing How we Know?

If we pay attention (or in this case if we practice mindfulness) we may wonder how this psychic information is being sensed. Guidance comes in many forms. We could see colours or pictures, hear words, feel emotions, or feel prompted to speak, make sound, dance or move. We could just know something without knowing how we know it.

So we can perform studies and look at outcomes, but how do we explain how this works scientifically?

We don't. Simply put, science can't explain everything you experience. Over the last ten thousand years we have relied on science to understand our experience of reality. And while it's given us so much, it can't explain what lies beyond the common five senses because it bases our whole understanding of reality as perceived only through them. Understandably so: science must be measurable. But there are things we just can't measure.

We all have the ability to sense beyond the standard five senses, but this ability has been violently squashed over the last ten thousand years. "Witches" and "charlatans" suspected of having extra sensory perception or psychic abilities were publicly burned or drowned. No wonder we haven't recognized or cultivated these abilities. We've been well trained not to!

Buddha and the Bigger Picture

If we turn to Buddha, the original teacher of mindfulness and one of the sharpest minds ever known, we get a fuller and clearer picture of reality. This is because the Buddha discovered and taught that we have a sixth sense with which to perceive reality: the mind.

In fact, your mind is sensing information into reality from your guidance in the same way as your eyes are sensing the realness of these squiggles I've typed out on the screen right at this very moment. The eyes see, the ears hear, the body moves and feels, the nose smells, the tongue tastes and the mind knows. And yes thanks to science we know the mind isn't restricted to the brain. Neuropeptides, the molecules that know emotions, are scattered throughout the brain and the entire body. A human being is a brilliantly interconnected communication network thanks to our trillions of space-filled cells.

It's fascinating how it works. During Reiki, the mind senses impressions made by your Reiki guidance, and depending on your guidance and your individual makeup, your mind processes the impressions into one or more recognizable "formats". You may know in pictures (clairvoyance), in sound (clairaudience), in smell (clairalience), in feeling (clairsentience), in tasting (clairgustance) or in perhaps the most direct way, in thought or knowing (claircognizance). And although not necessary, once you understand what you're sensing from your guidance, you can then be a conscious partner in the Reiki treatment.

Just know

So next time you are giving a Reiki treatment and "just know" that your hands need to stay at a certain spot longer, that you need to say something, or even that the person had cold pizza for breakfast, know that your mind is sensing this information from your Reiki guidance, from the highest of good. And that you're receiving it for the best possible healing outcome.

Okay, so now that that's done, any more questions? I wanna do the Snoopy dance again!

"how did you do that?"

sending healing through the atmosphere?

i know, it sounds like fiction.

the truth is that science will probably catch up in 300 years. until then, sorry. we can't bottle and sell it on shelves under a generic or commercial name. but it's real.

if you asked me about this ten years ago i'd have laughed in your face. but i do it all the time now and it's become pretty natural - to me at least. to others, they still wonder. and still ask...

so how does it work, exactly?

the psychic healing? healing transmission? mechanism of action? automatic writing? the truth is that we don't know entirely. we know, maybe, but we can't explain it in scientific terms. metaphysics doesn't yet know. quantum physics doesn't yet know. look at masaru emoto and the hidden messages in water. we know there is intelligence in intention. and if we're smart we don't take it lightly or misuse it. in fact, reiki can only be used for the highest of good and healing. it's something i teach my level two students, and only after they have learned and begun to practice the basics of self-healing and primary healing for others.

the appointment

most distance healing is for people who are far away. asia, north america, south america, africa, europe. but sometimes it's a convenient option for busy people who live pretty close by, who really need a healing but can't get to an in-person appointment because of work or family.

just like an in-person session, we book an hour-long appointment. but it's not over the phone. at our appointment start time, the recipient sits or lies down in a quiet place without distractions. that means turn off music, turn off the computer, the ringer, buzzer, beeper, close the door. and i do the same.

although this is not a requirement, it's important for two reasons:

first - if someone is committing to their healing then spending the time and effort towards it means they are energetically "showing up", and being an equal partner in their healing. i can't stress enough the importance of this.
second - and this is mainly to show them how sensitive they are - they are far are more likely to feel the effects of the treatment if they're still and not engaged in other activities.

science fiction can be prediction
the secrets of the hour

so here's how it goes. i myself come to stillness. for distance reiki to work i only need to know the name of the person and their geographic location. like i said, it sounds like fiction but it's real. science can't explain it yet, but if it works (and it does), why wait for science to catch up?

using a surrogate or a model (i use a pillow or a doll), initiate the treatment. first is a chakra assessment - a scan through the recipient's major energy centres to locate areas of trapped negative energy. then the treatment. exactly like an in-person treatment, only using the surrogate as a stand-in for the recipient.

i go into a meditative state as i do the treatment. one hand is on the 'body'; the other hand is typing. there's no force. information comes through and the report writes itself, automatically - what's being felt, what it means, where and it comes from, who it relates to and when it began.... basically whatever the recipient needs to know to heal from whatever wounds brought them to me. while the information is being recorded, reiki is being sent. it's like a closed circuit - the information comes through one hand, is recorded through the other hand and then....

i hit 'send'

after the treatment, i email what i've typed as a confidential report to the recipient.

and then crickets. it's usually quiet for a couple of days after this. i mostly forget about it. and then i get an email or a call that goes something like this: "that treatment was amazing. i could feel my hands / feet / head tingling! i saw colours. i felt a presence. i felt really light. and what you wrote to me - it was so... accuratehow did you know? how did you do that?"

...well, now you know.

three things i loved about learning reiki

And you get to work with your hands
teaching reiki is tiring work... but i love it. one of the best parts is watching the shift people experience as they go through an intensive weekend with you. some see bright colours, others feel sensations that are new and exotic to them. others still beam like sunshine after they are done. there are three huge reasons why i love teaching reiki to people:

#1: i love the feeling of "beginner's mind"

it was shunryu suzuki who said: "in the beginner's mind there are many possibilities. in the expert's mind there are few".

i remember my first Reiki course. it was supernatural. i was in awe at my teacher. i mean, he saw things. i couldn't discuss it with anyone. and yet, as soon as i had the chance i pounced on my homework: 10 treatments on other people.

it was my icebreaker at parties.

i'd sidle up to someone. "hey, are you free tuesday night?" knowing the answer would be a yes,  i'd follow up with, "great, can you lie down for an hour so i can put my hands on you and give you a reiki treatment?" nobody ever said no. i learned a lot this way.

in two months, i had given close to 40 treatments to different people.

#2: i love intuitive experimenting.

if practised correctly, you get to hone your intuition. feeling the different energies, the difference in sensation in each treatment, trying out new things and feeling creative again. noticing when i'd need to make movements, sounds or speak and deliver an important message. simply letting go of any control and letting reiki radiate, pulse or flow out, drenching the person in pure vital energy.

i found the more i let go, the more effective the treatment was. i'd pick up images, and know immediately that something they thought was the problem was just a physical manifestation of something hidden. and then hearing what people felt and sensed and knowing i felt and sensed the same things was amazing confirmation that reiki was working in subtle and powerful ways.

#3: you start with yourself

reiki is one of the few things you can actually do for yourself first. it's part of the course. you give yourself a treatment before you give anyone else a treatment. and as you do, you notice how effortless it is, how amazing you feel after and how beneficial it is to practice on yourself as much as possible. (i still do).

selfish, you say? sure. but who am i to tell you about you, before i start with me? and so i did. the transformation was slow but profound. i had radical shifts in perception. i had amazing shifts in my ability sense energy, target pain and illness and discover its roots. and i transformed from a pretty cynical hospital worker into a reiki healer and teacher. who woulda thought?

so even though teaching is hard work, it's a privilege to pass this ability on. and to anyone who feels the pull to learn reiki... get pulled! besides being easy and transformational, it's super natural.
